These were taken on the first night. We headed to Shilin after stashing our bags at our hotel, which was in Ximending.

On the speedy Taipei Metro system (ie subway). It's really fast - only 1.5mins to the next station. But then again, it only serves Taipei city, which is only one small area of Taiwan.

Eating at the food court in one of the major shopping malls - xin kong san yue (XXX mitsukoshi) Btw that korean dish that i ate was like s'pore food court standard. the beef was kinda hard, but ok. The rice really sucked. The serving was little, it was dry and stuck tot he bottom of the bowl. Grrrr. And it was expensive too...
Shu Wen watching TV in one of her new buys from Wu Fen Pu. Wow i can rave abt Wu Fen Pu for pages and pages. It's like Bugis Village w/ 1000 shops. The maze of shops seem endless. And the clothes are cheaper than in Ximending and in s'pore, of course. You can get cheap denim stuff - jeans, 3/4 pants, skirts, shorts, etc. And there are all sorts of clothes there...got cosplay costumes too! And of course super yummy bubble tea!!

Taiwan's enormous bubble tea! The amt is 1.5 times that of what u get in S'pore and the pearls twice! It tastes great too! And only at S$1!!! I'm drooling now just thinking of it!!

Delicious teochew porridge! I tried the pork w/ century egg and abalone porridge and they'r both good. Overall the food at Shilin is not bad...the portions are big and everything costs only abt S$2.

The last night we were there, we went crazy with food. Bought food from Shilin to our hotel and then went back to the street vendors to get more. I liked the takoyaki. It tasted good and costs only S$1.50 for 6 instead of $2 for 3 in s'pore.

Thoughts on Taipei....
A really nice shopping place. We chionged shopping for 3 days straight. For the first few days we couldn't get up for breakfast cos each day we'd shop till 11pm. I went to a theme park called 六福村 (can still rmb the corny jingle and laughable ads) on the last day and it was pretty fun. I like the ride called 'Pagoda's Wrath', which was essentially a ride that drops you from abt 8 stories high. But the journey to the them park was quite long, abt 1.5hrs by coach.
After the theme park, we went to try the hotspring at Beitou. But becos we didn't do any research or make any arrangements prior to our trip, we had to settle for a hot spring hotel which looked suspiciously like a Rabu Hoteru (Love Hotel). And the water wasn't even real hotspring water, just water with the hot spring minerals added to it. The most disturbing thing was that there was a glass window between the room and the bathroom, which supports my claim that it is a Rabu Hoteru.
The guys there check out girls openly. I saw a young guy flicking his eyes up and down at my fren, who was wearing a strappy top that day. And a lao pehpeh at the subway station kept looking at me when i wore a halter top. i got so peeved i promptly put on my jacket. Talk abt a patriachical society! I feel so lucky to live in S'pore. At least the guys here check girls out discreetly. (if they don't, they know they'd get screwed by the girls. harhar!)
The 7-Eleven there charges for plastic bags (in a bid to save the environment, i think). So for a few nights, the folks in Ximending were made to see a sad touristy girl trudging along the street carrying 2 bottles of 1.5l on top of her shopping bags. Oh yeah, the tap water in Taiwan is not potable so drink it at ur own risk!
There are lots of channels available on the tv in our hotel room, even HBO and Star movies, which we have to pay to watch in S'pore. And there's free porn too - my fren checked w/ the front desk after we chanced upon the porn channel.
I really like my hotel. It was only 3-star, no doubt, but the room was sufficently equipped and very clean. And it is in the heart of Ximending and just 5mins away from the Ximending metro station, so it's super accessible and convenient. The staff are really helpful and nice too. They explained patiently to us how to get to the theme park, etc. When the lift broke down on the 5th day, they apologised and gave all the hotel guests pineapple cookies the next morning. It was a nice gesture, even if pineapple cookies wouldn't mend the lift or help us carry our luggage from our room to the ground floor. But it was a sweet gesture all the same.
Recommendations for
Shopping :
-Visit Wu Fen Pu and Shilin to get cheaper clothes. Stuff from ximending and major shopping areas cost more.
-There are more shoes at Shilin than at Wu Fen Pu. And at Shilin, the real bargains only start after midnight. (My only regret is that we only realised that on the 4th night. So sad!)
-There's no trying of clothes in Shilin or Wu Fen Pu though. Butt the sizes are pretty standard so most medium-built to slim girls shud be able to get clothes there, dun worry.
Food:
-Shilin night market and Ximending street vendors! *Barbecued squid!!!*
-Bubble tea best to buy from Shilin or Wu Fen Pu. The Ximending buble tea tastes like shit! Seriously! My chocolate milk tea tasted like cold horlicks with pearls. Uggh!
